[a few words on] an imaginal space: clouds and seas and black-eyed-dogs

This is my fav in a series of soundtracked “cloudscapes” by An Imaginal Space (a.k.a. Spook), a vivid, ethereal and shimmering-from-a-mountaintop-at-sunrise ambient guitarist out of Derby, UK. A wonderful presence in all of my social streams, he’s cloaked in a bit of mystery, but I ask no questions and nothing more of him than to continue his lovely (and enviable) prolific output.…

[a few words on] @mark_ward_: one moon appears everywhere

“Fine Art trained” guitarist Mark Ward lives in Sheffield, UK, and his ambient electronica connects listeners to the serenity that inhabits every pastoral dream of the English countryside. He layers guitar with keyboards, field recordings and percussive loops, then filters with a gentle hand through software.…

66/55 for 07/04

66/55 at the free music archive

66/55 at bandcamp

Among my thirty tracks at the Free Music Archive as of this post, 66/55 is the most downloaded. The track was written in a backseat down Interstate 55 from Chicago to Peoria, Illinois, on a 1995 trip to say goodbye to my wife’s grandmother.…

sum + difference [disquiet0130-filteredmelody]

4 notes. 3 intervals of 3. then 12 pedals. Made mathematical sense, so the title references “An Individual Note” by Daphne Oram, this month’s Junto reading selection (I’ve only gotten as far as pg 50, tho). Image is my pedal board through a kaleidoscopic app.

Finally had an excuse to put my Pigtronix Infinity at the head of the effects chain.…

intransitive disapperance [disquiet0108-freebassel]

PROCESS
Connected to this assignment, and wanted to do some small part to keep Bassel’s cause and case out front. I’m not a foley artist and field recording is not my game, though, so consider this less a soundscape than a track that might run over closing credits.

Married some royalty-free congas, tambourines and trap kit loops on an Acid timeline.…

symbols (all the way) [disquiet0102-sonictinsel]

PROCESS

A random collision of 8-bar loops created in Propellerhead’s Figure app for iPad, royalty-free vocal and wind-chime samples by Mick Fleetwood and three takes of improvised guitar deconstructions of the Jingle Bells’ phrase “jingle all the way” played live over all of it. Assembled in Acid Pro.

This track is a one-minute, 24 bar section of what has become the intro and outro to my cover of Elvis’s “Blue Christmas.”…

dreamy solace of rivers and bridges [disquiet0088-3d]

PROCESS
Headphones required.

The melody is 5 patterns repeated 3 times on a guitar, played live with a touch of boost, delay and reverb.

The rhythm is built from a royalty-free drum construction kit for ACID called “Black Paint Weathered Beat.” There’s a 1-measure intro and a 4-measure pattern, and both repeat 3 times.…

Hyper(BlueSky)loop [disquiet0086-hyperloop]

PROJECT
The sky this weekend was as blue as it’s been in months. I stared at it through the window in my home studio and floated away on the notion of the sky as a loop – its endless blue, its cyclical regularity, its motion within motion.

The photograph is through the front window of my apartment, looking up at the roof of a 14 story complex two-blocks away with a 200mm lens.…

Grzegorz Bojanek: One Hot Day (remix of Call Pop)

Grzegorz Bojanek, also known as Eta Carinae, is an xclnt electro-acoustic musician from Poland. For a Junto remix project, he sampled guitar from my track Call Pop (both original versions below), and created a wonderfully dreamy track called One Hot Day, which appears on his latest release Constraints, a collection of tracks originally composed for the Disquiet.com…

Arc Of Visibility (Sense The Wind trailer score) [disquiet0071-windmusic]

PROCESS:

Arc of Visibility: The portion of the horizon over which a lighted aid to navigation is visible from seaward.

Sense The Wind is an inspired project about people who find independence, affirmation and freedom by taking risks and abandoning notions of limitation. As such, my goal this week became to create a flat-out positive one-minute piece of music that moved in and out of the action of the film’s trailer.…

The space shuttle flying over San Francisco. (true life is a waking dream) [disquiet0061-textinstagrambient]

As space travel is humanity’s waking dream, it was all the more fitting that the die rolled an instagram filter borne of a dream traveler…

Arc Welded [disquiet0040-kirschnerplus1]

PROCESS:
Turned Kirschner and Popoff into my Crazy Horse and dialed up a tribute to Neil Young’s noise record Arc, the final side of the Arc/Weld live album of his 1991 Ragged Glory tour. Snipped about 2 1/2 mins of the duet, then layered a looped, distorted guitar over it. Couldn’t get the range on the fretboard I wanted in one take, so there are 2 takes twisted into this wreckage (so it’s, well, almost a live performance :^D).…

Dowsabel: One Dream To Another (remix of Flying Time)

Dowsabel (chris wells, Columbus, US) loves obsolete words, and he took his musical name from the Latin for sweet and beautiful. His music lives up to the promise in his name, and his remix of my remix of a collision of bird sounds and acoustic guitars provides exponential entertainment and purpose to my track (which is below his track notes).…

flying time [disquiet0009-avian]

a thrush and an acoustic guitar. like a supercalafragalistic cartoon on your shoulder.

guitar:
“Chord progression on mic’d acoustic guitar. A Major, c# minor, b minor, E Major.”

avian:
“Song thrush on a spring evening, 17th of march 2007 in a forest north of Cologne, Germany.”
