Below The Decks: The Shimmer Of Sealegs

Broadcasting since 1922 from Kingston, Onterrible, CFRC 101.9 FM is Canada’s longest-running campus-based broadcaster and a “100% not-for-profit, volunteer-powered media that fills the gap left by the mainstream.” The acronym, however, does not stand for Canadian Free Radio Company, but, rather, “Canada’s Famous Rugby Champions,” since sports broadcasts comprised most of the station’s original programming, save for a few lectures, concerts and convocations.

Here in 2015, my ambient tracks Truth Is A Lonely Place and The Shimmer Of Stars In Green Water [both off Particle Theory (2014)] were played on two successive Tuesday broadcasts of the Below The Decks show, hosted by a mellifuous DJ and sound artist, K.L. Sealegs (twitter, tumblr, free music archive), whose musical erudition and classic Canadian wit match her eloquence.

Friend and collaborator Lee Rosevere appeared on the 10 February show, where Sealegs interviewed him on his life and work while showcasing a few of his tracks, one of which was our collab Truth Is A Lonely Place. In the ensuing week, she listened to the rest of Particle Theory and played The Shimmer Of Stars In Green Water on the 17 February broadcast. Sealegs also read the liner notes to Particle Theory as the track faded out, her transcendental voice resulting in a definitive interpretation of the passage’s spirit. In both shows’ playlists, I ended up in the midst of esteemed company. Such a kick.
