Solo Set: Saturday 20 May

Lacquer down and light it up! This Saturday (20 May) at Halyards in Gowanus, I’m flying solo and electric, opening for the debut of xclnt friends The Tell. On for ~half-hour starting 9:30…

The Tell is a trio formed of the core of After School Special: Josh Matthews, Ashley Semrick-DesRochers, and David Miller. I’ll be doing a 25-30 minute “Storytellers” set to ease the throttle into the big show, and let everyone float away into the evening. We’ll laugh a bit, maybe cry, maybe even daydream like landlocked surfers.

Stripped down songs, just me and Fabien (my Peekamoose custom M2), a few pedals and my Fender Super Champ X2 amp. Short set, so ambient flights to a minimum – more of an Americana-heavy romp through a few favs from across my catalog, with some superhero origin backstory between. For sure, Windfall and Love In This Land. The other three or four are up for grabs. It’s a Saturday night and I feel like leaving everyone with a smile or two, so nothing with too much gravity.

Since my last solo live performance, there’ve been nine records, a quarter million spins and 70K downloads(!!), a ton of collaboration, a bit of exposure, and a lot of inspiration. All this to say, this gig is overdue, and I hope it’s way less time until the next time.

#DaCaLuF 159: Entomology Windfall

Des belles lagunes et des petits insectes chiliens…
Beautiful lagoons and small Chilean insects.

Petite rando au Chili pour admirer les beaux panoramas de la région. Il faut tout de même penser à baisser les yeux pour ne pas écraser les bébêtes qui se promènent sur le sentier.
Small hike in Chile to enjoy the views of the region. Still, think to look down to avoid crushing the critters that walk on the trail.

The Bellais family from France (DAvid, CAmille, LUcile et Félix) is traveling around the world in a converted old fire truck for two years. They’ve used a few of my tracks in their video episodes, and it’s an absolute kick to follow along and hear my songs pop up every so often. Follow them here:

Windfall Comfort Zone

Enlightened look back at an Israeli illustrator show from January 2015 set to my track Windfall [albums: Windfall (2004), Reflected.10×10 (2012)]. The show gave a set of illustrators a medium constraint (square format light-box) and told them to go crazy. So awesome – constraints are the new freedom

32 works of contemporary illustrators interpreting the concept “Comfort zone.” A large square format light box was designed to give illustrators working limits and challenge them to leave their comfort zone. The light box led many of the artists to use light as a key element in their work.
The decision to use the medium of a light box is multi-faceted: first, more physical dimension (both of depth and a light box)… And the use of light adds a dimension symbolic of self-irony. In Hebrew (and other languages), the concept of “illustration” comes from the verb “to shine, to shed light on something.”

windfall: spaghetti carbonara

Another stellar use of one of my tracks in the xclnt Brazilian cooking show, Torrada! Torrada!. In this episode, my 2004(!) song Windfall soundtracks the creation of spaghetti carbonara. Delícia!

As always, I {heart} everything about this (even with my track mis-titled “Windy Fall” in the credits :^D). This is the 3rd time the show has used my music. The other two times, Carrot Cake set to Man Again, and Perfect Fluffy Rice set to ok, are below.

Essa é a versão #TorradaTorrada do Spaghetti Carbobara, delícia delícia!

Complete recipe.

windfall on the liz berg show (wfmu)

WFMU’s Liz Berg from 6/27/2014

Few things are more awesome (or cool or hot or sick or tight or quiche or jelly or whatever euphemism you use to say “yes!”) than getting played on WFMU. In this case, my track Windfall (also at the Free Music Archive) spun midway through the June 27th episode of the Liz Berg show, which airs every Monday morning from 9 to noon (podcast stream/download/subscription available at link).

Berg’s show is…

Fist-pumping, air-drumming freeform mayhem. Caffeinated rock, experimental pop, oddball beats, and novelties.

In a burst of wonderful synchronicity, the show opened with a track called Cerulean by The Electric Amygdala, a nom-de-plume of Canadian producer, musician and sound artist (and good friend) Lee Rosevere.
