#DaCaLuF 127: The 12th Step On The Open Ocean

The 12th Step [off still echoes (2013)] plays with sea lions, whales, penguins, seals and orcas off Argentina’s Valdes peninsula in this Bellais family adventure.

The Bellais family from France is traveling around the world in a converted old fire truck for 2-years. They’ve used a few of my tracks in their video episodes, and it’s an absolute kick to follow along and hear my songs pop up every so often. Follow them here:

This vid made me smile this week. Releasing work under “NC” creative commons licensing (in my case BY-SA-NC) confers on folks the right to use tracks, straight or remixed, in non-commerial work. Now, after putting my last two releases up at the freemusicarchive, searches on my name are starting to return hits. Here, my track one city soundtracks a bike ride down a New Zealand mountainside.

12th step: treviso motorcycle

A motorcycle ride through the Italian countryside with Venetian Marco Carraro, seen through a Go Pro Hero 3+.

Bored, on a cold December Saturday, I enjoyed a great afternoon riding through Montello’s Woods (north of Treviso, Italy). In those places, during the World War I, the Italian Army fought against the Austrians who wanted to cross the Piave River.
As you can see by the sunset, the weather was almost perfect. The temperature was quite low but my clothing did its job very well.
The motorbike is a Yamaha Supertenerè 750.
The camera is a GO PRO Hero 3+ (chest and helmet).
This is my first Video.
Hope you like it!

the 12th step

The music was co-written in 2001 with Bill Kollar, a brilliant New York-area engineer and producer, who coaxed out the glorious rhythm guitar verse progression and overall tempo.

I hear noises outside my door.
They’re the kinds of noises you can’t always ignore.
Drunken lovers stumblin’ to their floor.
Ain’t it funny when the everyday becomes such a chore…

The stairwell speaks of their arrival,
creaking slowly up they spiral,
held up by one another’s lurch.
Mr. Christ himself never had such a church

They’re openin’ up that side door again,
and they’re crawlin’ up those side stairs again.
It’s just funny, until one of us walks in
to find them trippin’ up that 12th step again.

I hear the wandering echo of a gull
Misjudgin’ the water, scrapin’ itself on a shell.
I close my window to cut out its calls,
and listen to the drunks as they knock into my walls.

They’re openin’ up that side door again,
and they’re crawlin’ up those side stairs again.
It’s just funny, until one of us walks in
to find them trippin’ up that 12th step again.

I light one up and splinter the match in three.
And with that window closed, the smoke is all I breathe.

PROCESS:

This is my 28th submission to the Junto. This is a mix of my work for the Junto and singles and demos I’ve released (and one not) this year. Thank you to everyone in the group for your generosity, friendship and acceptance. And a special Thank You! to Mark Weidenbaum of http://disquiet.com, for dreaming up this amazing opportunity to learn and grow as a musician, songwriter, sound artist and general noisemaker.

These are just stitched together, eq’ed and compressed a bit for volume stability.

PROJECT:

This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2012. You will then select one five-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen five-second segments together in chronological order to form one single one-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should preferably of your own making, and not drawn from third-party sources.
