Below The Decks: The Shimmer Of Sealegs

Broadcasting since 1922 from Kingston, Onterrible, CFRC 101.9 FM is Canada’s longest-running campus-based broadcaster and a “100% not-for-profit, volunteer-powered media that fills the gap left by the mainstream.” The acronym, however, does not stand for Canadian Free Radio Company, but, rather, “Canada’s Famous Rugby Champions,” since sports broadcasts comprised most of the station’s original programming, save for a few lectures, concerts and convocations.

Here in 2015, my ambient tracks Truth Is A Lonely Place and The Shimmer Of Stars In Green Water [both off Particle Theory (2014)] were played on two successive Tuesday broadcasts of the Below The Decks show, hosted by a mellifuous DJ and sound artist, K.L. Sealegs (twitter, tumblr, free music archive), whose musical erudition and classic Canadian wit match her eloquence.

Friend and collaborator Lee Rosevere appeared on the 10 February show, where Sealegs interviewed him on his life and work while showcasing a few of his tracks, one of which was our collab Truth Is A Lonely Place. In the ensuing week, she listened to the rest of Particle Theory and played The Shimmer Of Stars In Green Water on the 17 February broadcast. Sealegs also read the liner notes to Particle Theory as the track faded out, her transcendental voice resulting in a definitive interpretation of the passage’s spirit. In both shows’ playlists, I ended up in the midst of esteemed company. Such a kick.

windfall on the liz berg show (wfmu)

WFMU’s Liz Berg from 6/27/2014

Few things are more awesome (or cool or hot or sick or tight or quiche or jelly or whatever euphemism you use to say “yes!”) than getting played on WFMU. In this case, my track Windfall (also at the Free Music Archive) spun midway through the June 27th episode of the Liz Berg show, which airs every Monday morning from 9 to noon (podcast stream/download/subscription available at link).

Berg’s show is…

Fist-pumping, air-drumming freeform mayhem. Caffeinated rock, experimental pop, oddball beats, and novelties.

In a burst of wonderful synchronicity, the show opened with a track called Cerulean by The Electric Amygdala, a nom-de-plume of Canadian producer, musician and sound artist (and good friend) Lee Rosevere.

npr studio360 review: between stations (yellow dog blues) [disquiet0125-junto360blues]

Honored to have been highlighted as one of the two best tracks among some stellar contributions. Produced originally for Disquiet Junto challenge 0125.

By far the longest submission at 9:17, Westy Reflector sandwiches his psychedelically influenced cover in the static of a radio dial. Reflector (born Dave Westreich) tells Thompson, “No one in the story is in a fixed place. The Easy Rider’s not in a physically fixed place and Susan Johnson’s not in a mentally fixed place. Nobody seems to be fixed in time or in space.”

“I love that you gave it that much thought,” says Thompson. “Maybe that’s why it appealed to me on just so many levels and was my choice almost from the first time I heard it.”

music manumit pick: i must have love

Music Manumit’s Music Only Podcast is co-hosted by Tom Ray of Lorenzo’s Music and Doug Whitfield of Netizen Empowerment Federation. My track “i must have love” off of still echoes was Tom’s pick to lead off the December 8th show. Those guys have interviewed and showcased a lot of creative commons artists that I dig, and the podcast opens as many worlds as rabbit holes. It was a real thrill to see their archive.org link pop up while searching on my name and to find out they dug my song.
