Below The Decks: The Shimmer Of Sealegs

Broadcasting since 1922 from Kingston, Onterrible, CFRC 101.9 FM is Canada’s longest-running campus-based broadcaster and a “100% not-for-profit, volunteer-powered media that fills the gap left by the mainstream.” The acronym, however, does not stand for Canadian Free Radio Company, but, rather, “Canada’s Famous Rugby Champions,” since sports broadcasts comprised most of the station’s original programming, save for a few lectures, concerts and convocations.

Here in 2015, my ambient tracks Truth Is A Lonely Place and The Shimmer Of Stars In Green Water [both off Particle Theory (2014)] were played on two successive Tuesday broadcasts of the Below The Decks show, hosted by a mellifuous DJ and sound artist, K.L. Sealegs (twitter, tumblr, free music archive), whose musical erudition and classic Canadian wit match her eloquence.

Friend and collaborator Lee Rosevere appeared on the 10 February show, where Sealegs interviewed him on his life and work while showcasing a few of his tracks, one of which was our collab Truth Is A Lonely Place. In the ensuing week, she listened to the rest of Particle Theory and played The Shimmer Of Stars In Green Water on the 17 February broadcast. Sealegs also read the liner notes to Particle Theory as the track faded out, her transcendental voice resulting in a definitive interpretation of the passage’s spirit. In both shows’ playlists, I ended up in the midst of esteemed company. Such a kick.

echo lake: fundy adventure rally

Echo Lake [off Stay Home vs. The Love Shoppings (2007) and Reflected.10×10 (2012)] powers the middle legs of this video recap of the 500km Fundy Adventure Challenge rally. I’ve only ridden a motorcycle twice in my life – the last time over 20 years ago. I’ve not had any opportunity since, so the GoPro cycling vids popping up now w/ my songs are 100% xclnt. As a bonus, this one leaves the ambient engine noise “playing” along with my track, which I {heart}.

[a few words on] @jonchius: because panda

I don’t remember how jonchius [http://jonchius.com], a talented, wry and culturally literate web programmer and designer out of Toronto, CA, came into my streams, but as time has marched, we’ve made reciprocal infiltrations into all of our virtual circles and my life since has been infused (suffused?) with his adventures.

His twitter stream, a loosed consciousness romp that has nothing to do with programming but everything to do with coding, has connected me to a consortium of high and low philosophical provocateurs. Sometimes it’s the people hiding in plain sight who can speak the most relevant truth, because they are not only present, they are invisible to authorities (for now) and unfiltered by agenda.

jonchius changes handles and url’s on a dime to suit his mood and perspective (in the last couple months on twitter, he’s been neuer_panda, pandarchy, pandatje, pandamonium, panda-ebooks, and as of this writing, ionchivs).  I look forward to meeting him IRL one day, provided the Canadian-US border remains open. Pandas forever.

Bassling + Lee Rosevere + Nofi: Riding High Waves (remix of “riding waves”)

A 2nd remix by Bassling (Jason Richardson) of my riding waves. In it, Bassling adds his deft bass to Lee Rosevere‘s percussion and vibraphone, my guitar and nofi‘s original track. This rounded-out full-on quartet performance creates unexpected harmonic convergences and becomes a whole (and real) band – thankfully without van politics, ego mastications and “yellow-M&Ms-only” rider demands.

From the soundcloud track description:

Response to Happypuppy2 – Nofi-westy-lr-riding-high and Thereflectors – Riding-waves with a detour via Basslingsss – Unmistakeable-release

Lee Rosevere: Riding High Waves (remix of “riding waves”)

Canadian musician, producer and label founder Lee Rosevere used my riding waves for the 132nd disquiet junto challenge, adding hi-hats, cymbals and triggered rhythmic vibraphone flourishes. His additions lend an elegance to the track, highlighting and engaging all sorts of spaces without causing any clutter. From the soundcloud track description:

I didn’t want to get in the way of Westy’s guitar and took a cue from his introduction of the melody of “Mercy Street” to play mostly hi-hat and cymbals, ala Stewart Copeland (who appears playing cymbals on Peter Gabriel’s SO album.. but not on “Mercy Street”).

To temper my inclination to play too much, I set the rest of the pads to play tuned vibraphone notes, which hopefully interplay with the vibe sound on nofi’s original track.
