#DaCaLuF 128: Crystal Never Hurts Whales

Crystal Never Hurts [off still echoes (2013)] travels with whales trailing the Bellais family off the coast of Argentina.

Des baleines … encore des baleines … on adooooooore !
Musique: Crystal never hurts par Westy Reflector

The Bellais family from France is traveling around the world in a converted old fire truck for 2-years. They’ve used a few of my tracks in their video episodes, and it’s an absolute kick to follow along and hear my songs pop up every so often. Follow them here:

San Jose Museum Momentum Follow-Up

Disquiet.com’s Marc Weidenbaum and the other participants in the San Jose Museum Momentum Installation talk about their respective interventions.

Weidenbaum’s description:

The San Jose Museum of Art has uploaded this eight-minute video featuring the various folks who, like me, contributed works as “interveners” for its current Momentum exhibit, which celebrates the museum’s 45th anniversary. I talk in the video at 2:52 and 3:59.

My piece is “Sonic Frame,” a response in three screens to a video by Josh Azzarella. Each screen contains a unique set of seven different audio tracks composed to complement it, so each time the video plays anew it is accompanied by different sounds. Among the participating musicians are Taylor Deupree, Natalia Kamia, Julia Mazawa, Steve Roden, Naoyuki Sasanami, Christina Vantzou, Stephen Vitiello, and Scanner.

The Momentum exhibit runs from October 2, 2014, through February 22, 2015. More on the exhibit here (“How Sound Frames Vision”) and at sjmusart.org. Video hosted at youtube.com.

From the Museum’s YouTube description:

Published on Dec 23, 2014
What happens when a museum invites a ballet dancer, a bicycle designer, a bodypainter, a calligrapher, a cartoonist, a comedian, an inventor, a poet, a sound artist, and a yarn-bomber to “intervene” in an exhibition? Learn about the ten super creative people behind the exhibition “Momentum: an experiment in the unexpected.” The exhibition is on view through February 22, 2015.

The exhibit runs through 22 February 2015.

My original post on the exhibit, including a list and links to all the artists involved.

#DaCaLuF 126: She Still Echoes Through Wildlife

she still echoes (like a summer) [off still echoes (2013)], a song about long-ago choices and now-consequences, lends a poignancy to this travelogue of sea life in the Argentinian Valdes peninsula by David Bellais.

save the world (from ourselves)

sirens out my window
echo down the alleyway
explosions and fragmentation waves
made the city shift and shake

we saw it loud
we heard it clear
‘cos no one lives in isolation here

now we have to save the world again
so zero out time
because now is then
baby, take a look around you
save your requiems
we’re gonna have to save the world from ourselves again…

driverless cars running the lights
everywhere we are tonite

think it over
think it through
in this moment, who are you?

save your requiems
we’re gonna have to save the world
from ourselves again
and again…

#DaCaLuF 124: Fire In The Arcuide

fire in the arcade [off transient lines (2013)] soundtracks a Bellais family adventure amidst cliff-dwelling Patagonian parrots (Monk Parakeets) in Argentina. Fwiw, we have Monks here in my Brooklyn neighborhood. They nest in a Con-Edison sub-station on the edge of a graveyard about 16 blocks south of me.

Pour débuter la descente en Patagonie, voici la falaise aux perroquets !

Infinite Snowboard Destination

Snowboarders Felix Berres and Leander Greitemann teamed up with Pleasure Snowboarding Magazine and SIAMS Clothing to make a video at the Ruhrquelle resort in Germany. Set to Infinite Destination [off Hola, Sayulita! (2010) and Reflected.10×10 (2012)], this is about as close as I get to appearing in a Warren Miller film. :^D

Kamera: Dominik Freund
Edit: Felix Berres

I Could Not Record Today

living-room-corner-09162008-2

I could not record today.
My studio is not soundproof
enough for a city daytime.
Contractors hired by an aspirational
Brooklyn property developer
stamp rumblefooted underpinnings
for a cantilevered condo to be
four times the size of the
sixty year old
two family the developer
demolished a month ago.
The mufflebooms travel
into my rear office studio,
up through my mic stand,
from the sub strata.

On the front side of my apartment,
the back of a post office, across the street.
The carriers often shout at each other
in the loading dock
while jumping
on and off their trucks.
One of them, a man with birdtones,
sings arias from Norma.
As a mechanical gate opens and
closes to let the trucks
in and out, his tenor lends
the gate a mournful movement.

Night will bring challenge, too.
The Bingo Hall on 5th Avenue allows patrons
access to its rear alley abutting
the northern border of my apartment complex.
The alleyway is a de facto back lounge
where winner inksters come out to smoke
and make on-a-lucky-streak joyouts.
The players on losing tails fall off
towards the streetside
exit of the alleyway
and smoke in silence,
as passing headlights echo through
the flickering alleyway’s security gate.

Tomorrow I’m going to mail holiday packages
too long sitting on my dining room table.
I look at the gifts meant to be given,
gifts that people have
no idea they are going to receive.
Procrastination self-inflicts purgatories
between loneliness and connection,
but today I will exorcise this unquiet
into a happy suspension,
as when your partner isn’t talking, and you hear
the soft rustle of a newspaper
and a sweater against a sofa…
things that mean everything,
that you don’t notice,
until you are standing still
or cannot record.

sum + difference = mystery in the fog

Sum + Difference [disquiet0130] off Particle Thoery (2014) soundtracks a beautiful “mood board” camera test by North Carolina editor and motion designer Holden Kim.

This was just a quick test with my new BMPCC one morning when there was a little fog in the air.
After testing, I realize that I really need the full version of DaVinci Resolve to do noise reduction.
Other than that, I'm absolutely loving this little camera.

There Goes The Sky

I set out walking, just to find a friend,
Make a human connection in a world of pretend,
To share faith in the future, in the face of decay,
‘Cos when you can’t escape the night, every dawn is the end of days.

The walls get high,
The darkness amplifies,
(And) there goes the sky.

You can understand but it doesn’t mean you feel.
The hardest things to show are the easiest to conceal.
Actions can destroy more than words can heal.
God save us all when all the truths are revealed.

The walls get high.
The darkness amplifies.
(And) there goes the sky.
