Grzegorz Bojanek: One Hot Day (remix of Call Pop)

Grzegorz Bojanek, also known as Eta Carinae, is an xclnt electro-acoustic musician from Poland. For a Junto remix project, he sampled guitar from my track Call Pop (both original versions below), and created a wonderfully dreamy track called One Hot Day, which appears on his latest release Constraints, a collection of tracks originally composed for the Disquiet.com…

“Take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so much as a headache or a mythology.”
– Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, 1932)

i blow my mind
almost every night
with my early girl
and a couple transient lines

it’s not that i
have too much time
it’s just that i
make time to fry

i am slipping in and out of time
watching as my neighbors fly
out their windows way up high
every time i close my eyes

but this mass hallucination
is just a restless indication
that we can’t deal with
how really real all of this
really is

you can take a holiday
from reality
whenever you like

i go offline
anytime i have time
with my early girl
and a couple other close friends of mine

you say you want to feel real
why do you want to feel real?

STORY:

I’m in Detroit. Or what I think is Detroit. Wandering around in the rain. I’m in town to play a show and I can’t sleep. Neon lights abandoned Main Street. Restaurants and artist studios nestled between broken glass windows and crumbling bricks.…

chime. rinse. repeat. [disquiet0072-domesticscore]

PROCESS:
Recorded my doorbell and washing machine. Since the washing machine is smack in the middle of our apartment’s hallway, there is no escaping its swishing and whirring while it runs. It’s not necessarily an “intrusion,” because I feel luckier than lucky to have a washer and dryer in my apartment, but it is loud and there can be no vocal tracking in my home studio when there’s a load of wash to do.…

Arc Of Visibility (Sense The Wind trailer score) [disquiet0071-windmusic]

PROCESS:

Arc of Visibility: The portion of the horizon over which a lighted aid to navigation is visible from seaward.

Sense The Wind is an inspired project about people who find independence, affirmation and freedom by taking risks and abandoning notions of limitation. As such, my goal this week became to create a flat-out positive one-minute piece of music that moved in and out of the action of the film’s trailer.…

one city

she walks into union square
sends the pigeons flying
didn’t think i’d find her there
didn’t think of trying

she sits on a bench above the subway
as the trains rumble by
i see her shake

inside the hiss of a subway’s brakes
it means everything and nothing just the same

a city
to strangers
one city
two strangers
one city
too strange

dreams between drags on a cigarette
while i watch
under the lights of an august city
that will never stop

red street, the light of a taxi’s brakes
it means everything and nothing just the same

a city
to strangers
one city
two strangers
one city
too strange

PROCESS:
@nofi was one of my first followers on SoundCloud from the Junto (I started with #0004). Over the last year, I admired and absorbed a lot of his work and we shared laughs a few times on Twitter. I feel lucky to have had even the most cursory electronic interaction with him.…

PROCESS:
Start point: 02:50
Duration: 02:40
Added drums and guitar as the two new elements.
All the talk of space in the original track inspired me to break out the ebow for the 1st time in a while.
To get more interstellar, I applied plate reverb, reverse delay and phaser to guitars at different points.…

As space travel is humanity’s waking dream, it was all the more fitting that the die rolled an instagram filter borne of a dream traveler…

the 12th step

The music was co-written in 2001 with Bill Kollar, a brilliant New York-area engineer and producer, who coaxed out the glorious rhythm guitar verse progression and overall tempo.

I hear noises outside my door.
They’re the kinds of noises you can’t always ignore.
Drunken lovers stumblin’ to their floor.

like these chords

this one’s for lovers forced to live apart b/c of distance and/or time. not sad, tho. it’s in that moment when one knows the other’s coming home.

we’re stronger than this day – that’s all I know all along
and your distant night flight voice – is just the prettiest song

you left this life for the myth – you’ve been gone a while
fall into a trance with me – travel the stars

we’re like chords that ache to play
and open doors on sunny days
we’re like these chords

we’re the keepers of the truth – we never tired of the world
and now you’re coming back to me – with everything that you’ve learned

got the sun on your back – heading east racing clouds
fall into a trance with me – under night flight stars

we’re like chords that ache to play
and open doors on sunny days
they’re all I got, when you’re far away
we’re like these chords

we’re like chords when you’re far away
and open doors on sunny days
they’re all I got and they ache to play
but we’re like these chords
we’re like these chords

i must have love

This track materialized one night after a friend of mine off-handed challenged, “Westy, I bet you can’t write something unabashedly happy.”

#lightwalkers

sayulita-mosaic1

Late one late December day in the late ’00s, on a new-mooned new-years evenight in the Mexican-not-Mayan Riviera, a small vacation coven gathered under soft starlight, poolside on a bluff overlooking an inking Pacific Ocean. As the group’s just-like-grandma’s cake started to kick in, Orion turned away from Earth for a few moments and a twinge of lawlessness neuroscaped through them one by one, in a cascade.…
